Information about Us
Hello, my name is Dylan,
Hi, I'm Loraine.
I'm a thirteen years old girl from Vlaardingen. I live in a flat with my mom and two dogs. I also have an older brother but he lives in his own house already. My hobbies are playing the piano, going outside, sometimes I go to a musical or another play and I love to run with my dogs or just alone. I also love to read books. Sometimes when I feel sad I just tell myself that everything will be okay. If it's not, it's not the end. I'm very kind to everyone. I can be friends with everyone. |
Hi!
|
Hi! I’m Tjeerd! I’m a Dutch boy from Vlaardingen, 13 years old and I’m on the school VOS. I have a mom, a dad, a bird and an older brother called Stan! He’s 15 years old! I like to be creative (for example drawing or to make something out of wood), playing (computer) games and playing outside! I also like to make movies! (for school or animations) To be honest, I don’t really have a goal in my life! For example: I don’t know what type of job I want to have, I don’t know where I’m going to live, but I know it should be something funny! |
Our School
Like you can read, we're all on the school the VOS! Here's some information about our school, because than you know how it is here!
There are around 650 students, and around 30 classrooms. They all have electricity-plugs and we use them a lot. Also in the hall we use energy, for exmple the GreenUp, the Vending/Candy-machine, all the toasters and the coffee-maker!
There's also a library in our school! We don't own it, but it's built in our school. There's a little garden outside for the teachers

Action plan
At school we use a lot of energy! Think of:
- The computers
- The lights
- The heater
- The vending machine
- The printer
- The water tap
- The Greenup
- The ventilation machine
- The coffee-maker
Actually we use energy all the time and sometimes we don't even notice it!
We can use energy on a much handier and better way! It's our task to improve the use of energy at school!

Tips to save energy at school!
Tip 1.
On school we have a lot of computers. But except that they're handy, they also use a lot of energy! So if you don't use your computer anymore, turn it off! Some teachers keep the computers on when they leave the room! (for example in a break) Tip 4 We can also make energy by ourselves! If you for example use Solar-Panels, you can provide energy! Of course, Solar-Panels are quite expensive, but you do save a lot of energy and money by let them provide the electricity! |
Tip 2.
Close the doors and windows as much as possible! Than the warmth won't leave the classroom and you don't have to put on the heater! That saves a lot of energy! In the summer you even don't have to use the heater! Tip 5. A sweet or candy is nice! For the people who want something sweet, we have a vending machine! But exept they're handy, they also use electricity! The electric plug is always using energy, while we even don't use it! For that problem there should be a button, to put the machine On/Off! |
Tip 3.
On school we have a lot of lights, which use a lot of energy too! So if you leave the classroom, turn off the lights! It's also handy to use the daylight from outside, because sometimes we even don't NEED the lights! Tip 6. Actually, this tip is quite easy! In the toilets, we have water taps, to clean your hand after going to the toilet. But a lot of people think it's funny to open the water tap, so a lot of water is being wasted! Please don't do that! It isn't funny, but it only wastes water, and energy! |
The interview
Dylan had an interview with someone on this school who is the facilities employee:
o. Hello, what's your name and what do you do here at school?
I'm Jeroen van Heck and I'm a Facilities employee.
1. Do we have any solar panels on our school, if so how many?
Yes, we almost have 200 of them.
2. How much do the panels save every year?
They are 200 Watt panels, so it depends on the weather.
3. How much do the vending machines use per hour?
They use about 800 Watt per hour.
4. How much electricity do we use per year in total?
A lot, thousands of thousands of kilowatts.
5. Could the students do anything to make it ( question 4) less?
Yes, they can close the windows or turn down the heater and turn of the lights;
6. Could the teachers do anything to make it (question 4) less?
Basicly the same.
7. Does the Greenup machine get more money then it uses in energy?
Probably not, but it does help cause less plastic is found in the water outside.
8. How many computers do we have here at school?
Every student has a laptop and there are around 500 students, every teacher has one and every classroom has one wich means we have about 550 laptops/computers.
9. What kinds of lights do we use?
We have LED and TL lights
10. is the school doing something at this time to save energy?
Not at the moment, but another VOS school nearby is changing the full of a heater to something that lasts longer.
We had an interview with someone who knows everything about energy at school!
But... What do "normal" kids on school know about it?
We also interviewed some of them: What do they think of, when they hear "Saving energy at school"?
Name: Heidi
Age: 12
I think of using solar panels and insulation. (like double glass)
There also shouldn't be digital boards!
Name: Charlotte
Age:11
I immediately think about bio gasses! That's quite handy!
Name: Xavier
Age: 12
We should charge our devices at home, so we don't have to do that at school!
Name: Dano
Age: 12
I think of energy-saving light bulbs! They're better than LED-bulbs.
Name: Rafael
Age: 13
If we all charge our devices at home, we could save a lot of energy!
And we should have LED-bulbs.
Name: Lorenzo
Age: 13
We shouldn't turn on the lights! (Join the Dark Side...)
Name: Daniel
Age: 12
We should turn off lights and remove plugs when we leave the classroom.
Name: Luciano
Age: 13
We have to close the school! Then we can't waste energy anymore...
Name: Umut
Age: 13
Solar panels are very usefull, and we have to switch off the lights!
Name: Jonathan
age 13
I think of turning off the heaters.
Name: Mirage
Age: 12
We shouldn't charge our phone at school, but at home!
Name: Ameer
Age: 13
You shouldn't charge your devices when they're having a full 100% battery!
Name: Mikey
Age 12
There should be less lights and we have to turn everything off when we're done using them (monitors)

In the interview above, we asked questions to other people.
But we did also get some questions. We'll answer them using the information we know!
Question 1.
Does your school have a policy for saving energy at school? If so, give a short summary of this policy!
Well, actually we do have ways to save energy at school, but we can't really force people to do all of these things!
For example:
- We have a lot of solar-panels on the roof of the school, which provides a lot of energy!
- In the winter we close the windows, so we don't have to turn on the heaters that much!
- The Smart-Boards are only on when we have to use them! For example when someone should do a presentation.
- People are asked to charge their devices only when needed.
Question 2.
Do you safe energy at school at the moment? And how?
In the last question, we explained what we do to save energy at school, and of coarse we hope that everybody sticks to these "rules"!
But there're not forced to do that (For example, they can't decide if they use the Solar Panels), so some of the people are economical with energy, some of them aren't!
But maybe after this project, people will realise that we should be more clever with using energy!
Question 3.
Are students expected to implement any of these measures?
We do tell the students to be economical with energy, but actually, it's their own dicision how they deal with it!
Luckily, a lot of people are using energy in a clever way, but sadly, some of them don't!
Question 4.
Come up with 3 ideas to let students use less energy.
We came up with these ideas:
1. We could hang up posters on the walls in school, because everybody walks by, so they see them all the time!
If we make these posters a bit funny, maybe people will remember them and they might use energy in a wiser way!
2. Tell all the kids at the beginning of the school year that they should handle in a good way with energy!
(It might be possible that people aren't interested in this subject, so you should come up with something they DO like!
For example:
If you say that we should be economical and wise with the use of energy, some kids aren't interested!
But if you tell them what we can do with the money we've saved (for example a nice trip to the ZOO), they would have more intrest!)
3. Maybe this idea is a bit logical, but let the classes do this project too! WE have learned a lot of this project and saving energy, and so other classes will do that too!
But we did also get some questions. We'll answer them using the information we know!

Conclusion
We've made this project, and here's a conclusion about what we've made!
We've made this project, and here's a conclusion about what we've made!
School uses a lot of energy!
Some of that energy is needed, but there's also some energy that we just waste...
For example, leave the lights on, charge computers while they're 100 %...
There're a lot of ways how to safe energy, and if we all did that,
the environment would be much happier!
(and we can save money which we can use for nice trips or stuff like that...)
