Our action plan:
1. First we will answer the sub questions.
2. And lastly, we will interview an expert to find out if eating green is more healthy, if it is better for the environment and why.
- Describe the meals each group member eats on a regular day (including snacks in between meals).
- Explain how your food contributes to the emission of CO2. What factors should be taken into account if we want to calculate this emission.
- Use www.eatlowcarbon.com and try to find out how much your meals contribute to global warming. You might need to improvise a bit.
- Device meals for one day that are greener than your average meals.

- How does your food contribute to the emission of CO2?
The carbon emission of food is produced by growing, rearing, farming, processing, transporting, storing, cooking and disposing of the food you eat. For instance, a lot of vegetables that do not grow in the Netherlands are imported with airplanes and that contributes to the emission of CO2. - What factors should be taken into account if we want to calculate this emission?
- You need to consider that for instance cherries are imported in the winter because they only grow here in the summertime. When they are imported there are carbon gasses used because of transporting.
- Another factor is the storage of meat for instance. We store it in the freezer, which again, uses gases that contributes to the carbon emission.
- Preparing food is also a factor that we should pay attention on. Did you know that a gas oven only uses 6% of its energy to cook? And an electric oven is not much better at 12%. If you use the oven on a warm day, you will also heat up the room and need to turn on a fan or air-conditioning. But if you use it on a cold day you won’t have to turn on the heating.
